Designing and developing a responsive website for a non-profit nature conservation organization

Background

Friends of Hinkle Creek is a non-profit organization that supports the Hinkle Creek Nature Area through volunteer opportunities, educational seminars, and operations of the Nature Center.

The organization started in 2021 and as they are looking to grow they recognized the need for a website to inform potential visitors about the park, and get more volunteers and sponsors.

team

I was the solo designer, and worked in collaboration with the main stakeholder on the website content

timeframe

April - July 2022

RESEARCH

What does the landscape of nature websites look like?

  • Lots of photography
  • San-serif fonts
  • Most nature center websites used green as a primary color
  • Orange was a somewhat common secondary color
  • Carousels for homepage hero sections
ideation

Drafting the information architecture

I collaborated with the primary stakeholder to determine the content they wanted to include, and then outlined buckets within which to organize it.

Visual Design

An earthy palette

We wanted the site to feel earthy and welcoming, with a simple sans-serif font for easy legibility.

development

Building it out

Based off the sitemap of content that we had mapped out (and keeping in mind how the site content could grow over time) I built out the pages within Squarespace. Using Squarespace provided an easy platform for some of the main volunteers to update the site content as things change and new events pop up.

photography

Capturing the natural beauty of the park

For the art direction of the site, we wanted to use photos as section backgrounds and supporting visuals, so I scouted areas of the park and then did a photo shoot around golden hour to capture it in the best light possible.

videography

A bird's eye view

We wanted a short looping video for the homepage hero section that would showcase the park in an interesting way while also not being too distracting to website viewers. Drone coverage offered the best approach for this, so I flew after taking still photos throughout the park.

conclusion

Happy clients

The organization was thrilled with the work done to create their website. One of the leaders from the organization, Robin, had the following to say:

"Working with Sean on the design and construction of our organization’s website was a pleasure. Sean listened carefully to our needs and expertly crafted an engaging, visually beautiful, and informative website that we a very proud of. Sean’s drone photography is stunning and thoughtfully used throughout the site to provide a moving visual experience and fully engage our audience. Sean has utilized a clear and concise format to present our information to the public. We couldn’t be happier with Sean and highly recommend his services."
