Crafting a website, wine labels and branding for a local, boutique winery

Client Background

Aptos Vineyards was originally founded in Aptos, CA in 1974 by the late Judge Marlo. In the last several years, his friend James Baker and his family have revitalized the legacy of Aptos Vineyards with new wine and a bright future.

They needed a website for marketing growth, direct-to-consumer eCommerce sales, and eventually grew to feature a wine club and tasting room as well.

Branding & Label Design

A nod to the local roots

As part of the latest brand refresh, there was a desire to update the labels, so I crafted a few different options. Ultimately the client team liked the concept of including imagery of the cement ship which is a famous local landmark along the Aptos coast. I pulled through those textures of the water contrasted with the gold to the rest of the design pieces, from the website to their new business cards.

art direction / photography

A picture is worth a 1000 words...and 750mL of wine

For the latest round of website updates, we wanted to visually showcase the newest wines in a fun, lively atmosphere. So with that art direction in mind, we arranged a small wine club style photoshoot at an outdoor venue, as well as another at the tasting room.

conclusion

Cheers!

People’s feedback about the website so far has been positive. A re-occuring comment has been that the site is easy to navigate.

Still, I'm excited to continue iterating and improving. As their list of released wines continues to grow I think it'll be good to add sorting and filtering options to allow users to hone in on the specific wine that they prefer.
